Everyone has experienced it. A flat tire is a nightmare regardless of when or where it occurs. Changing the tire on a tiny Toyota Prius is very straightforward. If you take the time to acquaint yourself with the tire replacement technique before a flat tire occurs, it will be even simpler. This can save time and prevent additional stress.
How To Change A Tire On A Prius
Taking off the flat tire
- If feasible, park the car at the nearest flat spot. Remove the jack, handle, wrench, and spare tire from the trunk's center deck board/auxiliary box.
- Using the wrench, loosen the wheel nuts slightly. A single turn to the left suffices.
- Place the jack under the vehicle with the labeled "A" side facing away from the vehicle and the center notch aligned with the jack point (two small notches in the underside edge of the vehicle next to the tire).
- Turn the jack's handle to raise the vehicle until the flat tire is slightly elevated off the ground. Remove the damaged tire after completely loosening and removing all the wheel nuts.
Changing the tire
- Remove any dirt or debris from the contact surface of the wheel. When a vehicle is in motion, minute dirt particles can cause wheel nuts to become loose.
- Align the wheel nut slots and install the spare tire on the wheel contact surface. Hand-tighten each wheel nut slightly and evenly (to do this, simply start at the top nut, then tighten the one directly across, and then the one across from that, and so on to keep the pattern going). Continue tightening each evenly until the tapered end of the wheel nuts is in contact with the "face" of the spare tire.
- Reduce the vehicle's height and finish tightening each nut equally with a wrench. Ensure that you devote all of your energy to this!
- Place the flat tire and all other items necessary to make the repair in the trunk.
Warnings
Emergency spare tires are not intended to be used as regular tires, so it is imperative to acquire a replacement as quickly as possible. Never exceed 50 miles per hour while using a spare tire, as these are not designed for high speeds.
